A report by the Commerce and Industry Ministry about states and Union Territories in Bharat and their logistics performance that the index they use helps gauge how well these places handle the movement of goods, which is crucial for boosting exports and economic growth.
This year, out of the 15 places they looked at, 13 are labeled as “achievers.” Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Chandigarh, and Gujarat are in this top-performing category. Unfortunately, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand didn’t make the cut this time and are now in the “aspirers” and “fast movers” groups.
Sikkim and Tripura did well, though. They moved up from “fast movers” in 2022 to the coveted “achievers” category this year. Other places that aced it include Delhi, Assam, Haryana, Punjab, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh.
There are also those in the “fast movers” category, like Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, and Puducherry. Meanwhile, “aspirers” are states like Goa, Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Daman and Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
The report, called LEADS, ranks these places based on their logistics systems, pointing out challenges and giving suggestions for improvement. Piyush Goyal, the Commerce and Industry Minister, highlighted that the logistics sector is crucial for the country’s economic growth and aims to reach a $35 trillion economy by 2047.
According to Goyal, the current logistics cost is quite high, between 7.8% to 8.9%, but he believes it can be reduced to 5-6%. The government is investing in infrastructure development, and he suggests the industry focuses on skilled manpower, state participation, and using technologies like AI, blockchain, and data analytics to further boost the logistics sector.
