In southern Tamil Nadu, heavy rains have caused a lot of trouble. Roads, bridges, and paddy fields in many districts are underwater, and residential areas are flooded. Sadly, one person has lost their life in Tuticorin. The situation is so bad that the state has asked for help from the Bharat Army, Air Force, and Navy to rescue people and drop aid in the affected areas.
Some places got hit really hard with rain. Kanyakumari got 17.3 cm of rainfall, Tirunelvelli got 26 cm, and Tuticorin got a whopping 60 cm in just 15 hours! To keep people safe, around 7,500 folks were evacuated and put in 84 relief camps. They even sent out SMS alerts to 62 lakh people using the Common Alert Protocol.
The state government is taking this seriously. They’ve declared December 18 a public holiday in the four districts most affected. The Chief Minister, MK Stalin, told officials to release extra water into the Kannadian channel since the Thamirabarani river is overflowing.
They’re pulling out all the stops for rescue and relief. The Army, Navy, and Air Force are on duty, and 84 boats are out helping people. Train services in the Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur section had to be stopped because the tracks are messed up from all the rain.
The weather folks, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), are warning that more heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is on the way. There’s a cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area making things worse. It’s a tough situation, and everyone’s doing their best to help those in need.
