Surabhi Sankhla, a 30-year-old woman from the city, recently brought home a silver medal from the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) Asian Championship in Bahrain. The championship took place from December 12 to December 16, and Surabhi’s journey was marked by determination and a strong will to succeed.
In the semifinals, Surabhi faced a tough match against a Pakistani player who dominated her in the first two rounds. However, in an impressive comeback, she won the match in the third round by technical knockout, securing her spot in the finals. Unfortunately, she faced defeat in the finals against a player from Kazakhstan but proudly took home the silver medal for India.
Surabhi, also a lawyer by profession, shared her dedication to training for the Asian Championship. She underwent special training twice a day and followed a strict diet regimen required for international matches. Despite the challenges of balancing her legal career and sports, Surabhi remained committed to giving her best in the ring.
Reflecting on her semifinal match against Pakistan, Surabhi mentioned the mental preparation required to face a taller and heavier opponent. Despite being dominated in the initial rounds, she didn’t let the pressure get to her and emerged victorious in the decisive third round.
Surabhi emphasized the difference between national and international matches, acknowledging the added pressure of representing her country. Her passion for the sport and determination to bring home a gold medal for India echoed in her words, expressing a commitment to continue her journey until the national anthem plays on the podium.
Surabhi’s mother, Sushma Sankhla, expressed immense happiness and pride in her daughter’s achievements. She highlighted Surabhi’s dedication, waking up early to train and manage her legal responsibilities. Sushma also stressed the importance of girls learning martial arts for self-defense in today’s environment.
Coach Vikas Sharma, who has been training Surabhi for four years, shared the initial surprise at her international participation. He mentioned her gradual progression from state to national victories, building confidence for the Asian Championship. Surabhi’s achievement as the first senior category girl from Madhya Pradesh to win silver in an international tournament is a testament to her hard work and determination.
