The Speaker of Bharat’s Lok Sabha, Om Birla, recently met with a group from the European Parliament’s security and defense committee. They got together in New Delhi to chat about how both Bharat and Europe appreciate stuff like democracy, rule of law, and diversity.

Om Birla was happy to share the news online. He mentioned how the European delegation praised Bharat’s leadership during its G20 presidency. The group also asked for Bharat’s help in dealing with issues like terrorism. Om Birla stressed that Bharat and Europe share common values and talked about strengthening cooperation between their parliaments.
In another meeting, Bharat’s Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, talked with the same European delegation about a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Bharat and the European Union (EU). They discussed how things were going with the FTA negotiations and ways to boost their economic ties. Goyal shared his excitement about the progress on social media.
Just to give you a bit of history, these FTA talks between Bharat and the EU started in 2007 but were put on hold in 2013. However, last year they decided to give it another shot, showing their commitment to making trade easier between them. The negotiations cover a bunch of areas, like making sure trade benefits both sides without causing problems for the environment or workers’ rights. Piyush Goyal had talked about progress in these negotiations back in October too.
