In a heated session of the Lok Sabha, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi accused opposition members of being “frustrated” over recent assembly poll results and of insulting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Joshi claimed that the people had expressed their support for Modi’s leadership in the recent elections, leading to the opposition’s apparent disappointment.
Joshi’s remarks were made amidst vociferous protests from the opposition members, who were reacting to the suspension of 33 members from the House on Monday for the remainder of the winter session. The suspension was a consequence of alleged “misconduct” by the MPs.
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister went on to condemn the opposition for reportedly bringing a “morphed photo” of Prime Minister Modi, calling it unacceptable. The tensions escalated, resulting in the suspension of 49 more opposition MPs, including notable figures such as Farooq Abdullah, Supriya Sule, and Shashi Tharoor, bringing the total number of suspended opposition parliamentarians to 141.
The suspended members, belonging to various parties including Congress, JDU, National Conference, DMK, NCP, AAP, SP, VCK, and BSP, were barred from entering both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha chambers until the conclusion of the winter session, scheduled to end on December 22.
The suspension followed repeated adjournments in the House, with opposition members demanding a statement from Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliament security breach on December 13. The demands were met with slogans and placards, leading to further disruptions in the parliamentary proceedings.
The motion to suspend the MPs was brought by Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal, and BJP MP Rajendra Agrawal, who was in the chair, requested the government to move the motion for the suspension of MPs. The total number of suspended MPs from both Houses now stands at 92, with 78 of them suspended on Monday.
The situation underscores the heightened tensions and disruptions within the Lok Sabha, raising concerns about the functioning of the parliamentary sessions during this winter session.
