President Herzog conveyed Israel’s readiness during a gathering of ambassadors, stating, “Israel is ready for another humanitarian pause and additional humanitarian aid in order to enable the release of hostages.” He placed the responsibility squarely on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and the Hamas leadership.
Hamas Rejects Prisoner Exchange Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict
Despite Israel’s proposal, Hamas has rejected negotiations over exchanging prisoners amid the ongoing conflict. A senior Hamas official, Basem Naem, clarified their stance, emphasizing their categorical rejection of negotiations on a prisoner exchange under the continuing Israeli offensive. However, Naem mentioned that Hamas remains open to any initiative contributing to ending the aggression, opening crossings for aid, and providing relief to the Palestinian people.
US Pledges “Ironclad” Support for Israel
In the midst of the conflict, U.S. Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin reassured Israel of “ironclad” U.S. support. Austin committed to continuing the provision of essential equipment for Israel’s defense, including critical munitions, tactical vehicles, and air defense systems.
Intensification of Conflict as UN Security Council Vote Looms
As Israel launched more deadly strikes on Gaza, the situation escalated ahead of an expected UN Security Council vote on another ceasefire demand. The conflict has persisted into its third month, marking the bloodiest ever Gaza war that began when Hamas initiated an attack on October 7. The toll stands at around 1,140 people killed in Israel, mostly civilians, and approximately 250 abducted. In Gaza, more than 19,667 people, predominantly women and children, have lost their lives due to Israel’s retaliation.
