In a recent development, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed deep concerns and anguish over the alleged serious misconduct by Members of Parliament (MPs) within the Parliament complex. The focus of his distress was the demeaning and denigrating actions directed at the constitutional office of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar. Birla conveyed these concerns during a meeting with Vice President Dhankar and Rajya Sabha Chairman, sparking further debate on the conduct of MPs.
According to reports, the controversy unfolded when TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicked Vice President Dhankar during an opposition protest on the Parliament stairs. The incident drew strong condemnation from the ruling BJP, leading to protests and expressions of support from various quarters, including leaders of the Jat Community.
Chaudhary Surendar Solanki, a leader from the Jat community, stated that a meeting had been called to decide whether the suspended TMC MP should apologize to the Vice President or face protests initiated by village councils.
President Droupadi Murmu also weighed in on the matter, expressing dismay over the incident. She emphasized the need for elected representatives to express themselves within the norms of dignity and courtesy, upholding the proud Parliamentary tradition of Bharat.
Simultaneously, members of Parliament from various opposition bloc parties, including those who were suspended, staged a protest in front of the Gandhi statue within the Parliament premises. Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Rahul Gandhi joined the protest against the suspension of 141 Opposition MPs.
Kharge highlighted the party’s commitment to continue the protest until the suspension of MPs is revoked. He criticized the ruling BJP, accusing them of attempting to create a dictatorship by excluding dissenting voices from the Parliament. Congress MP Karti Chidambaram echoed these sentiments, expressing concern about the trend of stifling opposition voices in the name of majority control.
The protesting MPs raised slogans of “save democracy” and carried placards reading “Save Democracy” and “Do not kill Democracy.” The suspension of an unprecedented number of 141 MPs during the winter session of Parliament has intensified the ongoing political turmoil, prompting a nationwide discussion on the state of democracy within the country.
