In a remarkable recognition of Bharat’s space achievements, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has been honored with the prestigious Leif Erikson Lunar Prize by the Husavik Museum in Iceland. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took to social media to congratulate ISRO for this significant achievement.
The Leif Erikson Lunar Prize specifically acknowledges ISRO’s relentless dedication and unwavering spirit in advancing lunar exploration, particularly through the successful Chandrayaan-3 mission. This recognition is a testament to Bharat’s growing prowess in space exploration and its contributions to unraveling celestial mysteries.
The award was received on behalf of ISRO by Indian Ambassador Balasubramanian Shyam, who shared that ISRO Chairman Mr. S Somanath sent a congratulatory message. The achievement is seen as a historic milestone, as Chandrayaan-3’s successful landing on the moon’s South Pole marked Bharat as the fourth nation, after the United States, China, and Russia, to achieve a lunar landing.
Chandrayaan-3’s triumph not only showcased Bharat’s technological capabilities but also signaled redemption after the disappointment of the Chandrayaan-2 crash landing four years earlier. The Vikram lander and Pragyan rover, post-landing, conducted various tasks on the lunar surface, contributing to our understanding of lunar elements and activities.
Following the success of Chandrayaan-3, Bharat swiftly moved forward with its maiden solar mission, Aditya-L1, launched on September 2. The spacecraft underwent multiple maneuvers, solidifying Bharat’s position in space exploration.
In a recent development, the Propulsion Module (PM) of Chandrayaan-3 achieved another feat by transitioning from lunar orbit to Earth’s orbit. ISRO shared this achievement on social media, highlighting the success of the unique experiment. The PM was brought from Lunar orbit to Earth’s orbit through an orbit-raising maneuver and a Trans-Earth injection maneuver.
Overall, ISRO’s recognition with the Leif Erikson Lunar Prize reflects India’s commitment to advancing space exploration and contributing significantly to scientific knowledge about the moon and beyond.
