In a significant move, the Ministry of Home Affairs has imposed a five-year ban on the Masarat Alam faction of the Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The decision aims to curb activities that threaten the unity, sovereignty, and integrity of the nation.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to his official handle to announce the ban, stating that the organization, officially known as ‘Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction),’ is declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ under UAPA. The group and its members have allegedly been involved in anti-national and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, supporting terrorism and advocating for the establishment of Islamic rule in the region.
According to a gazette notification issued by Additional Secretary Praveen Vashista, the Masarat Alam faction is known for its anti-India and pro-Pakistan propaganda. The group’s objectives include seeking freedom for Jammu and Kashmir from India, with the ultimate goal of merging the region with Pakistan and establishing Islamic rule.
The notification highlights that members of the banned faction have been actively participating in secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir, raising funds through various sources, including Pakistan and its proxy organizations. The funds were allegedly used for unlawful activities, such as supporting terrorist acts and engaging in sustained stone-pelting on security forces in the region.
Furthermore, the notification accuses the Masarat Alam faction of showing disrespect towards the constitutional authority and setup of the country. It emphasizes the leaders’ involvement in activities prejudicial to the integrity, sovereignty, security, and communal harmony of the nation, with reported linkages to banned terrorist organizations.
The Central government expresses concern that without immediate action, the banned faction may continue with its anti-national activities, advocating the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from the Union of India, and propagating false narratives to disrupt public order. In exercising its powers under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the government declares the Muslim League Jammu Kashmir (Masarat Alam faction) as an unlawful association, effective for a period of five years from the date of publication in the Official Gazette.
