In a recent development, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in Bharat has officially designated Lakhbir Singh Landa, a 34-year-old residing in Edmonton, Canada, as a terrorist. The move comes amidst strained diplomatic ties between Bharat and Canada over Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim of Bharat involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.
Lakhbir Singh Landa, originally from the Tarn Taran district of Punjab, Bharat, holds permanent residence in Canada. Under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967, the MHA has the authority to add individuals involved in terrorism to the Fourth Schedule of the Act.
Landa is identified as a member of the Babbar Khalsa International, listed as a terrorist organization. The MHA alleges his involvement in a terror attack on Punjab’s State Intelligence Headquarters and his role in supplying weapons and explosives across the border for terrorist activities in Punjab, Bharat.
The MHA accuses Landa of various criminal activities, including raising terror modules, extortion, killings, planting IEDs, smuggling weapons and narcotics, and using funds for terrorist acts. He and his associates are allegedly conspiring to disrupt peace in Punjab through targeted killings, extortions, and anti-national activities.
An open-ended warrant has been issued against Lakhbir Singh Landa, and he is the subject of a Look Out Circular dated June 9, 2021. The Central Government, exercising its powers under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, has made amendments in the Fourth Schedule to include Landa’s name.
Living in Canada since 2017, Landa is considered the mastermind behind several terrorism cases, including RPG attacks on Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters and Sarhali police station in 2022. In August, the Special Court of the National Investigation Agency ordered the confiscation of Landa’s property in his native village in Tarn Taran district under the UA (P) Act, 1967.
Previously involved in criminal and gangster-related activities, Lakhbir Singh Landa has been accused of continuing his anti-India activities from Canada, according to officials. He was declared a Proclaimed Offender on July 27, 2023.
