The earthquake triggered tsunami warnings for Japan’s western coast, prompting the embassy to establish an emergency control room for anyone seeking assistance.
The earthquake, which occurred at 4:10 pm local time, had an intensity of 7 on the Japanese scale in the Noto Peninsula, Ishikawa Prefecture, according to NHK. The tremors were felt in central Tokyo, and the depth of the earthquake was reported at 10 km, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The aftermath also included waves reaching various coastal areas, with Toyama Prefecture experiencing 80 cm waves and Kashiwazaki, Niigata Prefecture, facing waves of 40 meters.

As a precautionary measure, the tsunami warning urged residents of Ishikawa, Niigata, Toyama, Yamagata, Fukui, and Hyogo prefectures to quickly evacuate coastal areas. The Noto Peninsula’s Wajima Port in Ishikawa reported waves over 1.2 meters. The situation is currently under assessment for damages caused by the earthquake.
