Why & How were ‘Bharat Ratna’ & ‘Padma Vibhushan’ Est. | This Day In The History

January 2nd holds profound historical significance in the annals of Bharat and the global narrative, witnessing pivotal events that have left an indelible mark on history. Let’s delve into the historical tapestry of January 2nd.

1. On January 2, 1954, the country’s highest civilian award ‘Bharat Ratna’ and the second-highest civilian honor ‘Padma Vibhushan’ were established. They were initiated by the then President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Bharat Ratna is awarded for exceptional service in various fields, such as politics, art, literature, and science. Padma Vibhushan is given for a valuable contribution to the country in civilian areas. Initially divided into first, second, and third classes, they were renamed Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri in 1955. The first Bharat Ratna recipients in 1954 were Chakraborty Rajagopalachari, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, and Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman.

2. On January 2, 1991, Kashmiri Pandit ASI Omkar Nath was kidnapped by JKLF terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. After the murder of Tikalal Taplu on September 14, 1989, there was an exodus of Kashmiri Hindus from the Kashmir Valley. Farooq Abdullah’s government failed to provide adequate protection. Despite pressure, some Hindu families, including ASI Omkar Nath’s, resisted. He was kidnapped on January 2, 1991, by JKLF terrorists, and his fate remains unknown.

3. On January 2, 2016, terrorists attacked the Air Force base in Pathankot, Punjab. At 3:30 am, terrorists entered the airbase, resulting in the sacrifice of seven security personnel and injuries to around 37 others. All attacking terrorists were killed by the army. The attack was orchestrated by Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Maulana Masood Azhar and his brother Rauf. The mastermind, Shahid Latif, was killed on October 11, 2023, in Punjab, Pakistan.

4. January 2, 2024, is the second day of the year according to the Gregorian calendar. Today is Tuesday. The year 2024 is a leap year, featuring 366 days instead of 365. Leap day, with 29 days in February instead of 28, is the additional day in a leap year.
