Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, amid fresh violence in the State, has given a strong message that perpetrators will be held responsible if the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or AFSPA is reimposed.

The recent firing incident at Lilong Chingjao area in Thoubal district led to killing of four villagers by cadres of the Revolutionary People’s Front or RPF. It is the political wing of the outlawed People’s Liberation Army -PLA. Reportedly, this attack was connected to clashes over illegal drug trade revenue.

The CM, after visiting the injured at Raj Medicity, expressed deep distress and condemned the violence occurrences in a video message, urging the people of Lilong to maintain unity and peace.
The government cannot tolerate lawlessness forever, he asserted, and if people continue to go against the law they will be accountable for any stringent steps taken by the government, including the possible reinstatement of AFSPA.

The draconian act had been extended for six months in the hill areas of Manipur since October 2023. However, few areas are being exempt.

The slew of violent incidents included a gun battle in Moreh town near the Bharat-Myanmar border, which left many security personnel injured.

Demonstrating the government’s commitment to ensuring justice, it has initiated operations to nab the culprits involved in the violence.

Besides, CM Biren has urged the public to help the authorities by reporting suspicious or wary activities if there’s any and to remain united against the “enemies of Manipur” by avoiding involvement in any internal conflicts.
