In a recent development, Mossad head David Barnea issued a stern warning in response to the October 7 Hamas attack, stating that those involved “signed their own death warrant.” The declaration comes on the heels of the alleged Israeli strike in Beirut that resulted in the death of Hamas deputy chief Saleh al-Arouri.
During the funeral of former Mossad chief Zvi Zamir, Barnea compared the ongoing mission to eliminate Hamas leaders to the decades-long operation initiated by Zamir after the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre. He emphasized the commitment to holding accountable those responsible for the October 7 attack, asserting that they will be pursued wherever they are.
Barnea recounted Zamir’s dedication to the mission against the Black September group terrorists after the Munich Olympics attacks. Zamir, who led Mossad from 1968 to 1974, played a pivotal role in the worldwide hunt for the terrorists, a mission that saw daring operations in Beirut and attempts to sound warnings during the Yom Kippur War.
The current conflict erupted on October 7 when approximately 3,000 terrorists, led by Hamas, breached the Gaza Strip border, wreaking havoc in southern regions of Israel. The attackers claimed the lives of over 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and committed brutal atrocities. Additionally, more than 240 individuals, including children and the elderly, were abducted and taken hostage in Gaza.
Barnea’s statement reflects a determination to pursue those responsible for the recent attack, drawing parallels to historical missions undertaken by Mossad in the face of grave threats to Israel’s security. As tensions escalate, the region remains on high alert for potential developments in the ongoing conflict.
