External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar who is on a visit to Nepal met with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and exchanged substantive views on age-old, unique, and multi-faceted bilateral ties between the two nations. EAM Jaishankar arrived in Kathmandu earlier today and stated that he looks forward to engagements over the next two days. Kathmandu and New Delhi signed a long-term agreement on electricity trade, outlining Nepal’s commitment to export 10,000 megawatts of electricity to India over the next decade.
Jaishankar also met Foreign Minister NP Saud and held a brief conversation with him. During the two-day visit, Jaishankar co-chaired the 7th meeting of the Bharat-Nepal Joint Commission to review the overall state of bilateral relations and areas of mutual cooperation. The Bharat-Nepal Joint Commission, established in 1987, provides a vital platform for reviewing the ties between the two Asian countries.
Nepalese Foreign Minister NP Saud stated that Kathmandu and New Delhi are planning to ink two agreements and will inaugurate three cross-border transmission lines. He also informed about the three dozen items on their meeting agenda.
The two sides will also hold talks on connectivity and economic partnership, trade and transit, power and water resources, culture, and education, among other things.
For Bharat, Nepal is a priority partner under its “Neighbourhood First Policy” and according to the Ministry of External Affairs, Jaishankar’s visit keeps up the tradition of high-level exchanges between the two close and friendly neighbor countries.
Both nations share a unique tie of friendship and cooperation, which is characterized by an open border and deep-rooted people-to-people contact of kinship and culture. What forms the foundation of the existing ties is the Bharat-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1950.
