In a shocking incident in Sandeshkhali, West Bengal, a mob of 800-1,000 people allegedly attacked officials from the Enforcement Directorate. The attack, which occurred on Friday, targeted a team conducting searches at three premises linked to Trinamool Congress leader Sahajahan Sheikh. The searches were related to an alleged Public Distribution Scam.
The Enforcement Directorate stated that the mob’s intention was to cause harm, and three of its officials were severely injured in the attack. The attackers also robbed the officials of their belongings, including mobile phones, wallets, and laptops. The agency revealed that the violent incident unfolded while the team was accompanied by personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).
According to the Enforcement Directorate’s statement, Sheikh, identified as a convenor of the Trinamool Congress, resisted cooperation by refusing to unlock the door. As the officials attempted to gain access, the mob gathered within half an hour, armed with weapons such as lathis, stones, and bricks. Stones were allegedly thrown at the personnel during the confrontation.
The agency further claimed that the situation became increasingly violent, forcing other officers to escape without completing the search. The mob chased the officials, hindering them from performing their official duties.
The Trinamool Congress responded by labeling the incident as a “BJP conspiracy” and accused the central agencies of provoking locals. The party argued that the attack was a tactic to divert attention from alleged crimes and create a situation of “law and disorder” to defame Bengal.
In contrast, the BJP criticized the state government, calling it a “threat to national security.” BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari blamed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for encouraging individuals like Sheikh Shahjahan, accusing them of assembling Rohingya as henchmen to establish a reign of terror.
Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose condemned the attack, describing it as a “ghastly incident” and emphasizing the duty of a civilized government to prevent barbarism and vandalism in a democracy. The governor stressed that if a government fails in its basic duty, the Constitution of India will take its course.
