In a recent development, the administration of Lakshadweep, a picturesque Union Territory comprising 36 islands, including ten inhabited ones, has proposed additional tourism projects. These initiatives are aimed at boosting tourism in the region and showcasing its natural beauty to the world.
Government-led tourism activities are managed by SPORTS (Society for Promotion of Nature Tourism and Sports), and they include the iconic Paradise Island huts. As part of the Smart City initiative, a new proposal is on the horizon, introducing a 90-room hotel to further enhance the tourism infrastructure.
On the private sector front, Bharat’s first water villa project has been initiated by a Bharat group, marking a significant endeavor in the region’s tourism landscape. Lakshadweep has gained attention for its stunning natural beauty, and a recent visit by Prime Minister Modi has further highlighted the potential for tourism development.
Prime Minister Modi, during his visit on January 2, shared his ‘exhilarating experience’ of trying snorkeling in Lakshadweep. Through a series of posts on social media, PM Modi showcased the white beaches, pristine blue skies, and the mesmerizing ocean. His message urged adventure enthusiasts to consider Lakshadweep as a must-visit destination.
However, the positive momentum faced some criticism from Maldivian ministers, leading to an international controversy. Former Member of Parliament from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bishnu Pada Ray, condemned the unjust criticism, emphasizing the region’s limited development during the Congress era. He highlighted the potential for tourism development in Lakshadweep, and the negative opinions from Maldivian ministers led to the suspension of three of them by their President.
Ray expressed concern about the impact of these comments on the tourism industry, as cancellations of bookings have been reported. Various individuals, including film stars, cricket players, and other patriotic figures, are refraining from expressing positive opinions about India in the media. Despite this, Ray opposes such actions and believes that with Modi’s efforts, Lakshadweep is poised to become a tourist destination that surpasses even the Maldives.
The surge in tourism development in Lakshadweep marks an exciting phase for the region’s travel landscape. As new projects unfold and gain momentum, the Union Territory is poised to become a prominent destination for tourists seeking natural beauty and adventure.
