In a startling accusation against the United Kingdom, Beijing on Monday stated that it has detained a foreign national heading an overseas consulting firm for allegedly spying on behalf of the United Kingdom. China’s civilian spy agency, the Ministry of State Security (MSS), in a statement, said that it had apprehended an individual surnamed ‘Huang’, who is working with Britain’s MI6 while leading a foreign consultancy.
China’s Security Ministry refrained from naming the individual, his gender, nationality, or the consultancy he was working with. However, the statement mentioned that Huang began working with MI6 in 2015 regarding intelligence matters, during which he traveled to Beijing multiple times to collect intelligence.
China further claimed that Britain’s MI6 provided the individual with training and spying equipment to enable the exchange of intelligence and communication. Through this, MSS claimed that Huang was able to provide Britain with 17 pieces of intelligence, including a few national secrets. The Chinese government added that after conducting a careful investigation, it was able to find evidence that Huang engaged in espionage activities, and has taken criminal coercive measures against him.
Meanwhile, British officials have stated that Chinese spies have been targeting their officials in various sensitive positions such as politics, defense, and business to gain access to Britain’s secrets. Britain’s parliament had also identified a researcher whom it believed to be spying, however, he denied being a Chinese spy.
While the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning condemned the assertions, saying they were “entirely groundless”. She further urged the UK to Stop spreading disinformation and stop political manipulation and malicious slander against China.
When it comes to China, in recent years, it has been cracking down on perceived threats to its national security and has uncovered several cases of spying. Even China’s Security agency has urged the members of society to join its fight against foreign spies.
