In a recent development at Trichy Airport, the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) successfully seized a substantial amount of gold from a passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur. The gold, weighing 1025.12 grams and of 24K purity, is valued at a whopping Rs 64.51 lakh. The passenger, a Malaysian national, was apprehended, and a detailed investigation is currently underway.
The cleverly concealed gold was extracted from a paste-like material hidden within the passenger’s rectum. The AIU officers acted on specific intelligence, leading to the successful interception of the illicit goods. The incident took place on January 8, 2024, when the passenger arrived on OD223 Batic Air Flight from Kuala Lumpur.
This is not the first instance of gold smuggling at Trichy Airport. In December, the AIU seized 432 grams of 24K gold, valued at Rs 27.41 lakh, from a passenger arriving from Sharjah. Similarly, in October 2023, a passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur was caught with a gold bar of 717 grams, priced at Rs 42.91 lakh. The gold was concealed within capsules hidden in the rectum, showcasing the inventive methods employed by smugglers.
In another incident earlier the same month, the AIU at Trichy Airport discovered gold worth Rs 1,08,10,800. The gold, extracted from paste-like materials, was concealed in the shoes and underwear worn by the children of a male passenger arriving from Kuala Lumpur.
These incidents highlight the persistent efforts of smugglers to exploit various means for gold trafficking. The authorities at Trichy Airport continue to enhance their vigilance and intelligence gathering to thwart such illegal activities and maintain the security of the airport.
