In a recent civic reception in London, Bharat’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Singh revealed that PM Modi personally engaged with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to secure a safe corridor for the evacuation of stranded Bharat students. The Prime Minister’s intervention resulted in a notable four-to-five-hour pause in the conflict, allowing over 22,000 students to be safely evacuated from Ukraine.
Singh emphasized the Prime Minister’s proactive approach, mentioning that PM Modi also spoke with U.S. President Joe Biden to ensure that any external intervention did not hinder the evacuation mission. The Defence Minister credited Modi’s diplomatic efforts for the temporary ceasefire, highlighting the importance of the Prime Minister’s role in ensuring the safety of Indian citizens caught in the crossfire.
Apart from addressing the crisis in Ukraine, Singh highlighted Bharat’s digital achievements. He pointed out that Bharat boasts 80 crore (800 million) internet users, with the country’s seamless digital transactions through Unified Payments Interface (UPI) receiving global recognition. Singh stated that approximately 130 lakh crore digital transactions have occurred in Bharat through UPI, showcasing the country’s significant digital boom.
The Defence Minister’s visit to London also saw a warm welcome from the Indian community at the Indian High Commission, with chants of ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Mataram’ echoing in appreciation of the government’s efforts.
During the peak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Indian government launched ‘Operation Ganga,’ mobilizing 80 flights to evacuate stranded Indians from Ukraine. Prime Minister Modi strategically appointed four cabinet colleagues to oversee evacuation efforts in Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, and Poland. The government’s meticulous planning involved assigning over two dozen Union ministers to monitor the evacuation process and personally receive Indian nationals at Delhi and Mumbai airports.
