In a heated exchange of words, the Congress and BJP are at odds over the Congress’s decision to decline an invitation to attend the consecration ceremony of Ayodhya’s Ram Temple on January 22. The BJP leaders have taken to social media, sharing an old photo of Rahul Gandhi at Babur Tomb in Afghanistan, accusing the Gandhi family of harboring hate for Hindus.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, previously critical of the Congress, posted the purported photo on social media, questioning why there is animosity towards Ram Lala and accusing the Gandhis of displaying hatred towards Hindus. The photo in question dates back to 2005 and allegedly features three generations of the Gandhi family at the Babur Tomb.
The Congress clarified its stance, stating that Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the three leaders invited to the Ayodhya event, would not attend. The party deemed the ceremony a political event and emphasized that the temple construction is not yet complete. This refusal sparked a bitter exchange between the two political parties, with the BJP labeling the Congress as ‘anti-Hindu.’
Himanta Biswa Sarma continued to criticize the Congress, suggesting that accepting the invitation would have been an opportunity for the party to atone for their sins. The BJP leaders invoked Jawaharlal Nehru, comparing the current situation to Nehru’s stance on the Somnath Temple, claiming that history would judge the Congress as an anti-Hindu party.

In response, the Congress dismissed the Nehru reference, stating that Nehru’s actions at the Somnath Temple were transparent and well-documented in his correspondences. The party, along with the CPM and Trinamool Congress, criticized the BJP for using the Ayodhya event for political gain. They emphasized that religion is a private matter and should not be exploited for political purposes.
While Samajwadi Party leader Dimple Yadav expressed her desire to attend the Ayodhya event, party chief Akhilesh Yadav asserted that religion should not be entwined with politics. As the war of words intensifies, the political landscape remains charged with accusations and counter-accusations between the BJP and Congress.
