In a recent development, the Assam Police has registered a case against the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra organized by Rahul Gandhi and its coordinator KB Byju. The police allege that the yatra deviated from the prescribed route in Jorhat town, violating state government guidelines. The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday afternoon when the rally organizers took an unapproved route, leading to disruptions.
According to the police statement, the sudden change in the yatra’s route resulted in disturbances, with the organizers, including KB Byju and others, allegedly encouraging the crowd to defy traffic barricades and assaulting on-duty police officers.
Responding to the FIR, Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia dismissed it as a tactic to create unnecessary obstacles for the yatra. Saikia explained that due to inadequate police presence at the designated traffic diversion point and the small assigned route, the organizers briefly deviated from the path to accommodate the large gathering. He accused Himanta Biswa Sarma of being fearful of the yatra’s success in Assam and attempting to derail it.
As the yatra entered its sixth day on Friday, Rahul Gandhi, along with other participants, boarded a ferry to Majuli, the largest river island. The Assam leg of the march is scheduled to continue until January 25, covering a distance of 833 km across 17 districts.
Led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra commenced on January 14 from Manipur and is slated to conclude on March 20 in Mumbai. The extensive plan envisions the yatra covering 6,713 km over 67 days, traversing 110 districts across 15 states.
The case filed by the Assam Police adds a new layer of controversy to the yatra, highlighting the tensions between the organizers and the state authorities. The unfolding events will undoubtedly be closely monitored as the yatra progresses through various regions of the country.
