In a significant nod to his outstanding leadership and performance on the field, Bharat cricket captain Rohit Sharma has been named the captain of the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2023. The announcement, made by the International Cricket Council (ICC), highlighted the stellar contributions of players from both Australia and Bharat, particularly those who participated in the final of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Rohit Sharma had a sensational run in 2023, amassing an impressive 1255 runs at an average of 52. His standout performance came during the ODI World Cup, where he played a crucial role in Bharat’s journey to the final. Notably, his splendid innings of 131 runs against Afghanistan showcased his exceptional batting prowess.

Young Talent Shubman Gill Shines

Emerging as Rohit’s preferred opening partner, young batting sensation Shubman Gill established himself with a remarkable performance, accumulating a total of 1584 runs during the calendar year.

Travis Head’s Heroics in World Cup Final

Australian opener Travis Head, recognized for his class and impactful performances on the big stage, played a pivotal role in Australia’s success at the World Cup. Head’s phenomenal knock of 137 runs in the final against India contributed significantly to Australia’s sixth World Cup victory.

Virat Kohli’s Record-breaking Year

India’s batting maestro Virat Kohli had a record-breaking year in 2023, reaching three figures on six occasions. Kohli also surpassed the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record for the most international centuries during the World Cup, earning him the Player of the Tournament award.

Daryl Mitchell’s Five Centuries for New Zealand

New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell stood out with an exceptional performance, smashing five centuries and accumulating a total of 1204 runs at an average of 52.34.

South Africa’s Heinrich Klaasen secured the wicketkeeper’s position in the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2023. His superb batting, including a commanding 109-run innings against England in the ODI World Cup, played a crucial role in South Africa’s success.

South African pacer Marco Jansen’s outstanding efforts with both bat and ball during the last 12 months earned him a well-deserved spot in the Team of the Year.

Australia’s spinner Adam Zampa found a place in the ODI team, impressing with three consecutive four-wicket hauls during Australia’s triumphant run at the World Cup. Zampa finished as the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament.

Bharat Bowling Trio’s Dominance

Bharat’s bowling trio of Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, and spinner Kuldeep Yadav earned spots in the ICC team, showcasing their excellence throughout 2023. Siraj collected 44 wickets, Shami ended as the highest wicket-taker in the ODI World Cup, and Kuldeep finished the year with an impressive total of 49 ODI scalps.
