In a recent development, the Assam Police has transferred the criminal case against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders to the Crime Investigation Department (CID). The case revolves around alleged violations of guidelines, resulting in accusations of violence, provocation, and damage to public property during the Indian National Congress’s road event in Guwahati on January 23, 2024.
The Director General of Police, GP Singh, announced the transfer of the case in a statement. The FIR, registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act, includes non-bailable charges such as assault on public servants, causing hurt to deter public servants from duty, and causing grievous hurt to deter public servants from duty.
Earlier on the same day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his concerns on social media, accusing Congress leaders of wanton acts of violence, provocation, and assault on police personnel. The clash erupted after Assam Police, following Sarma’s directive, halted the entry of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra into Guwahati, leading to protests from Congress workers.
Sarma specifically targeted Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he provoked the crowd and violated guidelines, resulting in a massive traffic jam in Guwahati. The Chief Minister directed Assam DGP GP Singh to register a criminal case against Gandhi, emphasizing the use of social media footage as evidence.
Tensions escalated in Guwahati on January 23 as supporters of Rahul Gandhi clashed with the police during the yatra’s attempted re-entry into Assam. The government’s denial of permission for the yatra to use main routes inside Guwahati led to heightened security at Khanapara, the city’s entry point.
The transfer of the case to the CID indicates a significant development in the ongoing investigation into the violent clash. The allegations against Rahul Gandhi and other Congress leaders have sparked a political controversy, with the Chief Minister asserting that such tactics are alien to the peaceful state of Assam. As the CID begins its in-depth investigation, the incident continues to draw attention, raising questions about the role of political leaders in maintaining public order and adherence to guidelines during public events.
