In a proud display of valor, the 75th Republic Day March Past commenced on Kartavya Path, led by Parade Commander Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar. The procession began with the distinguished winners of the highest gallantry awards, the Param Vir Chakra and the Ashok Chakra. Among the heroes were Subedar Major Yogender Singh Yadav and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, both recipients of the Param Vir Chakra.
The Param Vir Chakra is bestowed for exceptional acts of bravery and self-sacrifice in the face of the enemy. Ashok Chakra recipients, including Major General CA Pithawalla (retired), Colonel D Sreeram Kumar, and Lieutenant Colonel Jas Ram Singh, were also honored for their valiant deeds.
As the Parade unfolded, four Mi-17IV helicopters painted the sky in a spectacular ‘Dhwaj’ formation above Kartavya Path. Adding an international touch to the celebration, French troops and aircraft participated in the “Platinum Republic Day Parade.”
The French detachment, exclusively from the renowned French Foreign Legion, showcased their unique music band led by Captain Khourda. Comprising 30 musicians, the band played the Legion’s anthem, “Le Boudin.” Originating in 1841, the Foreign Legion’s music is distinctive, featuring musicians from diverse backgrounds and a repertoire that blends traditional marches and opera sounds. The Legion’s musicians, first soldiers, actively participate in various operations and contribute to the Army-Nation link.
The marching contingent of 90 legionnaires from the 2 Infantry Regiment of the French Foreign Legion, led by Captain Noel, demonstrated their prowess. These legionnaires, adorned in the iconic White Cap earned through rigorous tests, have been involved in combat missions globally, including Afghanistan, Mali, and French overseas territories.
Established in 1841, the 2nd Foreign Infantry Regiment has played a vital role in major operations by the French Army. Notably, during the 1903 battle of El-Moungar in Morocco, 113 legionnaires displayed exceptional resilience against over 1000 Berbers. Engaged in conflicts from Indo-China to Algeria, the regiment has a rich history and has recently been part of missions in Africa, the Middle East, Estonia, and Lebanon.
Embracing modernization, the 2 Foreign Infantry Regiment joined the SCORPION program in late 2021/early 2022. Equipped with the versatile Griffon armored vehicle and the SCORPION combat information system, the regiment is also equipped with the medium-range anti-tank missile of the new generation (MMP).
In essence, the 75th Republic Day celebration was a testament to the bravery of Bharat and French forces, symbolizing the strong ties between the two nations.
