On January 27, 1880, American scientist Thomas Alva Edison received the patent for the electric bulb. While the bulb in your home may seem commonplace today, Edison faced a thousand failures in its creation, yet he never surrendered. Ultimately achieving success, Edison’s invention illuminated the world, enabling people to continue their activities after sunset. After years of relentless effort and thousands of failed attempts, Edison, who invested $40,000 in its development, created the electric bulb. Throughout his lifetime, Edison made over a thousand inventions. In addition to the electric bulb, he introduced the phonograph, a device for recording and playing back sound. Edison also devised the safety fuse and on/off switch for the bulb. Credit for the invention of the motion picture also belongs to Edison. He passed away on October 18, 1931.

On January 27, 1967, tragedy struck as the entire crew perished in a fire during the test flight of Apollo 1. The three crew members were in training for the first human mission of the Apollo flight. According to NASA reports, a massive explosion ruptured the command module, releasing flames and gas. The explosion’s sound led many to believe the command module had exploded, resulting in all three crew members being burned alive in the cabin at Cape Kennedy Air Force Station in Florida. Their last words were ‘We are burning.’ Despite efforts by engineers that day to open the door of the Apollo-1 spacecraft, they were unsuccessful. NASA, drawing valuable lessons from this tragic event, thoroughly investigated all technical glitches and implemented necessary improvements. With the dedication of scientists and engineers, the Apollo mission rebounded, culminating in the historic 1969 achievement as Astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon with the Apollo-11 mission.
