James Augustus Hickey started India’s first newspaper ‘Bengal Gazette’ from Calcutta on January 29, 1780. The newspaper was published weekly every Saturday in English. Initially, the newspapaer was priced at 1 rupee, and it had a circulation of more than 400. ‘Bengal Gazette’ stirred controversy among powerful prominent officials under British rule with his news publication. Hickey also had to face legal pressure for his critical reporting against the British and was eventually imprisoned. Despite being in jail, Hickey continued to publish the newspaper. However, on March 30, 1782, the Bengal Gazette was completely banned.
