In a recent incident that sparked controversy, the Mandya district administration removed the ‘Hanuma Dhwaja,’ a saffron flag with an image of Lord Anjaneya. Reacting strongly to this move, state BJP leaders launched a scathing attack on the Congress, accusing the party of indulging in appeasement politics. The BJP leaders warned of a statewide protest, threatening to hoist saffron flags on the roofs of all buildings and houses in the state.
Leader of the Opposition, Ashoka, questioned the Congress’s stance on Rama and Hanuman, contrasting it with their praise for Tipu Sultan. He criticized Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar, highlighting their recent statements about their names and suggested that the removal of ‘Hanuma Dhwaja’ exposed the Congress’s purported fake love for Hindus. Ashoka also alleged that the police used baton charges against Hindu activists during the incident.
BJP General Secretary V Sunil Kumar raised concerns about whether the Congress government had imposed a ban on hoisting saffron flags in the state. He urged the government to take immediate action to hoist the flag and discipline the officials involved in its removal. Kumar warned the Congress that the electorate might respond similarly to how the flag was removed.
C T Ravi, a senior BJP leader, took to social media to express his views, stating that the Congress leaders had no right to claim they were Hindus. Ravi argued that if the Congress were true Hindus, they would not have ordered the removal of the flag, accusing the government of fanning communal tensions.
MLC N Ravi Kumar, another BJP leader, questioned the Congress’s attitude towards Hindus, their deities, customs, and anything associated with them in the state. He accused the Congress of detesting Rama and Hanuman, refusing to take a stand against conversions and cow slaughter. Ravi Kumar claimed that the Congress preferred visiting mosques and dargahs, avoiding anything associated with saffron and refraining from entering temples.
As the political rhetoric escalates, the incident has brought to light the ongoing tension between the BJP and Congress in Karnataka, with religious sentiments and communal harmony at the forefront of the debate.
