1. On January 30, 1948, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Birla House in Delhi. Gandhi had arrived a bit late for the morning prayer meeting at Birla House. As soon as he entered, the people gathered there with excitement, exclaiming, ‘Bapu aa gaye.’ A person swiftly approached Gandhi, attempting to touch his feet. Before anyone could comprehend the situation, it was too late. Nathuram Godse fired three bullets into Gandhi’s chest and stomach. With no doctor present that day, Gandhi succumbed to his injuries within minutes. The motivations behind Godse’s act are complex, but a portion of the reasons he cited before his execution sheds light on his perspective. During those days, Gandhi was on a fast, demanding that Bharat provide Rs 50 crore to Pakistan. Godse mentioned this in his statement, asserting that as long as Gandhi lived, he would continue to work against Bharat and Hindus. According to Godse, Gandhi had transformed from a leader advocating for Bharatiya rights in South Africa to a figure considering himself the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong in Bharat. Godse concluded, ‘When Gandhi observed his last fast in favor of Muslims, I came to the conclusion that Gandhi’s existence would have to be ended immediately.’ Godse, along with Narayan Apte, received the death sentence and was hanged on November 15, 1949, marking the first ever death sentence in independent Bharat. January 30 is observed as Martyr’s Day and Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Day in the country.
