In a recent event at IIM Mumbai, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized Bharat’s growing capability, influence, and reputation, stating that it is imperative for the country to extend assistance to others in times of crisis. Highlighting the Bharat Navy’s role, he revealed that ten naval ships were deployed to combat both piracy and missile drone threats in the region.

Jaishankar shared a recent success story involving INS Vishakhapatnam, which extinguished a fire and rescued a tanker’s crew that had fallen victim to a drone attack. The minister also commended the Bharat Navy for rescuing Pakistani and Iranian fishermen from pirates, showcasing Bharat’s  commitment to aiding neighboring nations.

Expressing the need for responsibility, Jaishankar stated that Bharat’s enhanced capabilities demand proactive involvement in resolving crises in the neighborhood. He stressed that ignoring issues in the region could jeopardize Bharat’s standing as a responsible nation.

The External Affairs Minister recalled several instances where Bharat had extended support during crises, including naval deployments in the Red Sea, rescue operations during the Turkiye earthquake, and aid provided to Sri Lanka and Mozambique. He also mentioned Bharat’s contributions during the COVID-19 pandemic, where vaccines and medical assistance were sent to countries in the Indian Ocean region.

Jaishankar invoked the wisdom of the Ramayana, suggesting that like a king, a country should uphold a higher purpose. He emphasized that Bharat’s actions contribute significantly to how the nation is perceived globally.

In a remarkable display of prowess, the Bharatiya Navy executed two major rescue operations within 36 hours, saving crew members from two hijacked fishing vessels. The operations included thwarting a piracy attempt on an Iranian-flagged vessel, Al Naeemi, and rescuing 19 Pakistani nationals. Another successful mission involved saving an Iranian-flagged fishing vessel, FV Iman, and its 17-member crew from Somali pirates along the east coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden.

The Bharatiya Navy’s prompt response to distress calls, as demonstrated by INS Visakhapatnam’s intervention in the MV Genco Picardy incident, further highlights the nation’s commitment to maintaining security and aiding those in need. The Navy’s strategic and relentless efforts have not only prevented acts of piracy but also showcased Bharat’s readiness to contribute to global maritime security.
