2. Launched on January 31, 1958, America’s first satellite, Explorer-1, officially known as ‘1958 Alpha,’ marked a significant milestone in space exploration. Lifted into space by a Jupiter-C rocket at approximately 11:45 pm from the Cape Kennedy Center in Florida, Explorer-1 played a crucial role in the space race during the Cold War era. In response to Soviet Russia’s launch of ‘Sputnik-1 and 2’ a year earlier, Explorer-1 continued orbiting in space until 1970. Subsequently, the United States sent over ninety satellites into space as part of the Explorer series.

3. On January 31, 1961, a chimpanzee named Ham made history as the first primate to be sent into space in American space exploration. The mission, known as Project Mercury (MR-2), aimed to gather information on the potential effects of space travel on humans. After 18 months of training, Ham was launched into space, and upon returning to Earth, his capsule landed in the Atlantic Ocean, 130 km from the launch site. Remarkably, Ham emerged unharmed, with a visible smile on his face, captured by a photographer. Following his return from space, Ham found a home at the National Zoo in Washington in 1963 before being relocated to a zoo in North Carolina. Ham passed away on January 19, 1983, leaving behind a successful legacy that paved the way for future human space exploration.
