In her interim Budget speech in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman commended chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa for his remarkable performance in the Chess World Cup final against world champion Magnus Carlsen last year. The minister highlighted Praggnanandhaa’s strong fight against Carlsen, emphasizing Bharat’s growing prowess in the world of chess.
Sitharaman revealed that Bharat’s chess landscape has witnessed a significant transformation, boasting over 80 chess grandmasters in contrast to just over 20 in 2010. This surge in numbers reflects the nation’s escalating prominence in the global chess arena.
During her address, the Finance Minister underscored Bharat’s achievements in the field of sports, particularly referencing the outstanding performances of athletes in the 2023 Asian Games and Asian Para Games. She proudly announced that the country achieved its highest-ever medal tally in these events, showcasing the prowess of Indian athletes on the international stage.
Drawing attention to Praggnanandhaa’s valiant effort against Magnus Carlsen, Sitharaman acknowledged the young chess player as the country’s No. 1 ranked player. In August of the preceding year, Magnus Carlsen secured his maiden Chess World Cup crown by triumphing over R Praggnanandhaa in the tie-breakers of the final held in Baku, Azerbaijan.
