Senators have come up with a good negotiation of a $118 billion compromise which pairs tens of billions of dollars in wartime aid for Ukraine with border laws which aim at decreasing the historic number of people who have come to the U.S. border with Mexico to seek asylum.
Moreover, the legislation faced opposition from many Republicans in both chambers, and House GOP leaders stated that it would not even receive a vote.
Bipartisan negotiators are working hard to sell the package as part of a last-ditch effort for the approval of money for Ukraine’s defense against Russia. It emphasizes that Congress has the best chance to make changes to U.S. immigration law.
The bill will send military aid to Israel and funding for allies in the Asia-Pacific and humanitarian aid for refugees fleeing Gaza.
United States President Joe Biden has worked toward the deal with Republican and Democratic leaders in the Senate. However, it faces a difficult path to passage.
Republican senators have stated that the border policy doesn’t go far enough and questioned about additional aid to Ukraine.
Senator Marco Rubio, called it “an easy NO.” However, Donald Trump also showed strong opposition.
Deal is also expected to be opposed by some Democrats. Senator Alex Padilla, D-Calif., stated, “He opposes changes that it would make to the asylum process.
The package consists of $60 billion in aid for Ukraine and $14 billion for Israel. Notably, it would invest in domestic defense manufacturing, strengthen humanitarian assistance and manage the influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border. In addition, $10 billion would aid humanitarian efforts in Ukraine, Israel, Gaza and other places.
The package would also send $20 billion to immigration enforcement and money to hire thousands more officers to evaluate asylum claims, add hundreds of more Border Patrol agents and help to stop the flow of fentanyl.
