As the counting of votes progressed on Friday, projections by broadcaster Geo News revealed that independent candidates contesting Pakistan’s national election, many of whom are supported by former Prime Minister Imran Khan, emerged victorious in 47 out of 106 parliamentary seats.
According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, results have been officially declared for 57 seats so far, as reported on the panel’s website. The elections were held for 264 out of 265 seats in the national assembly, with a political party needing to secure 133 seats for a simple majority.
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) (PML-N) has secured at least 17 seats in the election. Sharif’s aide Ishaq Dar, speaking to Geo News, suggested that PML-N might consider forming a coalition government with independent candidates.
“I am confident that we will form a government,” stated Dar, expressing optimism about the potential coalition. He also mentioned that his party would gracefully concede if any other party emerged as a clear winner in the election.
The election results signal a significant development in Pakistan’s political landscape, with independent candidates backed by Imran Khan gaining substantial ground. Khan, who served as the Prime Minister of Pakistan until recently, has evidently maintained considerable influence even after stepping down from his position.
The success of independent candidates supported by Imran Khan underscores the continued relevance of his political vision and agenda in Pakistan. It also reflects the support and trust that many voters still place in Khan’s leadership and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
With the possibility of a coalition government between PML-N and independent candidates on the horizon, Pakistan awaits the formation of its new government with anticipation. The outcome of this election could have significant implications for the country’s future direction and governance, as various parties navigate potential alliances and strategies in the aftermath of the polls.
As the electoral process unfolds and negotiations for coalition-building continue, all eyes remain on Pakistan’s political landscape, awaiting further developments and announcements regarding the formation of the next government.
