The Assam Government is closer to realising its aspiration for enhanced connectivity in the Barak Valley as the Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s Steering Committee for Green Field Airports recommends “site clearance” for the proposed greenfield airport in Doloo situated in Cachar district.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing his satisfaction with the recommendation, shared on social media, “Under the Greenfield Airport Policy, establishing a new airport is broadly a two stage process – site clearance followed by in principle approval. With this decision of the Steering Committee, we are now one step closer to ushering a remarkable connectivity transformation in Barak Valley.”
The recommendation aligns with the Greenfield Airports or GFA Policy of 2008, reflecting the government’s commitment to bolstering aviation infrastructure across the country.
The Airports Authority of India or AAI submitted the proposal for site clearance under the GFA Policy, indicating a thorough review process involving consultations with key stakeholders like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation-DGCA and the Ministry of Defence.
This initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen regional air connectivity, particularly in the Northeastern Region, as demonstrated by schemes like UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik). UDAN aims to make air travel more accessible and affordable, with many airports in the region already operationalised under the scheme.
