On Thursday, Mahendra Bhatt, the state president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand, officially filed his nomination for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. This significant event took place in Dehradun, the capital city of Uttarakhand, in the presence of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and several other party leaders. Bhatt, who hails from the Brahmin community in Chamoli district, is viewed as a crucial figure for the BJP, particularly for his ability to balance various interests within the state.
Bhatt’s nomination holds strategic importance, given his background and political history. He contested for the Badrinath assembly seat in the previous state elections but faced defeat against Rajendra Singh Bhandari, the candidate fielded by the Congress party. Despite this setback, Bhatt’s stature within the party remains intact, as evidenced by his nomination for the prestigious Rajya Sabha seat.
Expressing gratitude for Bhatt’s nomination, Chief Minister Dhami praised the decision of the central leadership and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He emphasized the significance of Bhatt’s selection for the party and its workers, highlighting it as a moment of pride for all involved. The nomination of Mahendra Bhatt reflects the BJP’s concerted efforts to consolidate its position and representation in Uttarakhand’s political landscape.
BJP National President JP Nadda to Contest Rajya Sabha Elections from Gujarat
Simultaneously, the BJP’s national president, JP Nadda, is set to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat. Nadda, currently representing Himachal Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha, seeks to strengthen the party’s presence in Gujarat through his candidacy. The BJP has nominated a total of four candidates for Gujarat and three for Maharashtra in the latest list released ahead of the biennial Rajya Sabha polls.
Joining Nadda in the fray from Gujarat are prominent leaders Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Nayak, and Jashvantsinh Parmar. In Maharashtra, the BJP has fielded Medha Kulkarni, Ajit Gopchhade, and Ashok Chavan as its nominees for the upcoming elections. The party’s strategic selection of candidates underscores its commitment to securing representation from diverse regions across the country.
Expansion of BJP’s Representation in Rajya Sabha
The BJP’s nominations extend beyond Gujarat and Maharashtra, with the party announcing candidates from other states as well. Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and L Murugan have been nominated from Odisha and Madhya Pradesh, respectively, further diversifying the party’s representation in the upper house of parliament. Earlier this week, the BJP unveiled a list of 14 candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls, including notable figures such as former Union Minister RPN Singh and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi.
With today marking the deadline for filing nomination papers, the Election Commission has scheduled the Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, on February 27. Voting will take place from 9 am to 4 pm on the designated date, with the results expected to be announced later that day. The upcoming elections present an opportunity for the BJP to strengthen its presence and influence in the upper house, shaping the political landscape of the country for the foreseeable future.
