In a surprising turn of events, 48-year-old surgeon Jashvantsinh Salamsinh Parmar, hailing from Godhra, has filed his nomination as a Rajya Sabha candidate from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This unexpected move has left many astonished, including Parmar himself, who previously contested the 2017 assembly polls as an independent candidate.
Expressing his gratitude towards the BJP, Parmar hailed the party as the “largest” yet “democratic.” He emphasized that his nomination signifies the internal democracy within the BJP. Parmar stated, “I had never thought that the party would give me such a big responsibility.”
The nomination was filed by BJP national president JP Nadda, who is currently a Rajya Sabha member from Himachal Pradesh. The event took place in the presence of Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupinder Patel and other prominent party leaders. Apart from Nadda, BJP has nominated three other candidates from Gujarat for the biennial Rajya Sabha polls – Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Nayak, and Jashvantsinh Parmar.
The BJP has been actively announcing its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections across various states. Among the notable nominees are Union ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw from Odisha and L Murugan from Madhya Pradesh. Earlier this week, the party also revealed a list of 14 candidates, including former Union Minister RPN Singh and party spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi.
The Rajya Sabha elections are scheduled for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, on February 27. The Election Commission has set the voting hours from 9 am to 4 pm on the said date, with the deadline for nominations closing on February 15. The results of the elections will be announced on the same day. This biennial election process is crucial as the tenure of the incumbents is set to end in April, with 56 seats up for contention.
