Protests by farmers attempting to enter the national capital have entered their fourth day at the Shambhu Border. Security forces are holding firm, using tear gas to disperse agitating farmers who, in turn, are seen pelting stones at the police.
The protesting farmers, camped at the border points, have faced clashes with the police multiple times as they attempt to break through multi-layer barricades. Hundreds of farmers and some journalists have sustained injuries during these confrontations.
Despite a third round of talks between the central government and farmer representatives ending in a stalemate on Thursday, there seems to be a glimmer of hope. Jagjit Singh Dallewal, president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Sidhupur), stated that the government acknowledged the need for dialogue on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and shared debts. The government requested more time for a detailed discussion and committed to further talks, scheduling the next round for Sunday.
Union Minister Arjun Munda, part of the government delegation negotiating with the farmers, expressed optimism about finding a solution by the weekend. He highlighted a positive discussion between the government and farmers’ unions, focusing on topics raised by the union. The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday at 6 pm, aiming to reach a peaceful resolution.
The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have issued a “Delhi Chalo” call, urging the BJP-led Centre to accept their demands. Farmers from Punjab initiated their march to the national capital on Tuesday but were halted by security personnel at the Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana. The situation remains tense as both sides stand firm in their positions.
