Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a day-long visit to Jammu, marking only his second visit to the region during his current term that began in May 2019.
On the eve of his visit, PM Modi expressed his enthusiasm for dedicating projects that he believes will significantly contribute to the overall development of the region. In a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “I look forward to being in Jammu tomorrow to inaugurate key development works which will boost ‘Ease of Living.’ It will also be a landmark day for the education sector as various institutions, including IITs and IIMs, will get permanent campuses.”
During his visit to Jammu, the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone for projects amounting to ₹32,000 crore. The projects span across various sectors such as health, education, rail, road, aviation, petroleum, and civic infrastructure. Notable initiatives include the establishment of various IIT, IIM, and Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) campuses, new buildings for Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs), AIIMS Jammu, a new terminal building at Jammu airport, rail and road projects, and a Common User Facility (CUF) petroleum depot.
The event, scheduled to commence at approximately 11:30 am at Maulana Azad Stadium, will also involve the distribution of appointment letters to 1500 new government recruits in the Union territory. PM Modi will further engage with beneficiaries of various government schemes as part of the ‘Viksit Bharat Viksit Jammu’ program.
PM Modi’s visit holds significance not only for the development projects unveiled but also as it marks only his second visit to J&K during his current term. The previous visit occurred in April 2022. This visit takes place just ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls, during which PM Modi seeks a third consecutive term as the Prime Minister. One of the notable highlights of his second term was the historic abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019, leading to the reorganization of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
