Rani Chennamma’s death anniversary, Suryakant Tripathi Nirala | Imp of 21 Feb
The valiant Rani Chennamma of Karnataka passed away on February 21, 1829. The British aimed to annex Kittur, leading to a war between them and the queen. Despite the British attacking with 20,000 soldiers and 400 guns, they suffered heavy losses in the battle. Many British officers were killed by Rani Chennamma's forces, and some were taken as prisoners. The British promised not to wage war against Kittur, but this was merely a ruse. They broke the promise, and due to the smaller size of Rani Chennamma's army, she eventually lost the war. The British imprisoned Rani Chennamma in the Belgaum fort, where she died on February 21, 1829. Though she lost to the British, Rani Chennamma's bravery will be remembered throughout history.
