Since its commencement in November 2021, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor has been steadily advancing. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently visited the project site to review an under-construction tunnel, demonstrating the government’s commitment to Bharat’s first high-speed corridor project.
During his interaction with the media, Minister Vaishnaw provided insights into the project, particularly focusing on the underwater rail tunnel. This remarkable feat of engineering spans 21 kilometers, with 7 kilometers passing beneath the sea. At its deepest point, the tunnel plunges to 56 meters underwater, boasting a width of nearly 40 feet. Inside, trains will achieve speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour, ensuring rapid transit between Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
Vaishnaw also shed light on the bureaucratic challenges faced by the project, accusing the former Maharashtra government, led by Uddhav Thackeray, of obstructing its progress. However, with the assumption of Eknath Shinde’s leadership, the necessary permissions were obtained, allowing the project to move forward.
To expedite construction, innovative approaches have been adopted, including simultaneous work from four directions. The Rail Minister emphasized the significance of this endeavor as Bharat’s inaugural high-speed corridor project, aimed at gauging the complexity and capabilities of its design.
In terms of timelines, Vaishnaw disclosed that the initial segment of the high-speed train will be operational between Surat and Bilimora by July-August 2026. He highlighted the installation of the Shinkansen system, renowned for its safety, underscoring the project’s commitment to passenger security.
On another note, the National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL), responsible for overseeing the project, shared a video showcasing a tunnel traversing two states – Maharashtra and Gujarat. This aerial footage underscores the project’s role in fostering closer ties between regions and facilitating progress.
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project stands as a testament to Bharat’s engineering prowess and commitment to modernizing its transportation infrastructure. With significant milestones achieved and future prospects promising, the nation eagerly anticipates the inauguration of its first high-speed rail network, heralding a new era of connectivity and development.
