In a bid to resolve the conflict sparked by the Russian invasion, Ukraine is looking towards Bharat to play a crucial role in a planned “peace summit” to be hosted by Switzerland in March. Iryna Borovets, the Ukrainian deputy foreign minister, expressed hope that Bharat would actively participate in the summit and contribute to finding a resolution. She reiterated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s invitation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Ukraine, highlighting Bharat’s potential role in the country’s reconstruction efforts, with infrastructure damage estimated at nearly $500 billion.
Borovets described reports of Bharatiya nationals being coerced into fighting alongside Russian troops as “evil” and “outrageous,” emphasizing the importance of Bharat’s stance on the conflict. While Bharat has called for an end to hostilities and a return to diplomacy, Borovets noted that Russia has not shown a genuine interest in pursuing peace talks.
Ukraine has extended invitations for high-level visits, with Zelenskyy expressing willingness to visit Bharat while inviting Modi to Ukraine. The countries are also preparing for a visit by Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba to Bharat. Borovets emphasized the need for dialogue and cooperation, urging countries like Bharat to participate in the global peace summit to facilitate discussions on various aspects of Zelenskyy’s peace formula.
Bharat’s involvement in rebuilding Ukraine presents significant opportunities for businesses and investors, especially in infrastructure development and housing projects. Borovets highlighted the potential for collaboration in futuristic weapon systems such as drones. She extended an invitation to Bharatiya entities to participate in Ukraine’s recovery efforts.
Addressing concerns about Bharatiya students in Ukraine, Borovets stated that while the number has decreased due to the conflict, Ukraine welcomes them back once the situation stabilizes. Many universities have relocated to safer areas, ensuring a conducive environment for education. Borovets expressed a desire to facilitate their return and reassured them of Ukraine’s commitment to their safety and well-being.
In discussions with Bharatiya officials, Borovets emphasized the urgency of the situation on the frontlines, Zelenskyy’s peace initiatives, and the importance of international cooperation. She called for a united effort in addressing the humanitarian crisis and restoring peace and stability in the region.
