In a recent statement, Ukraine’s defense minister, Rustem Umerov, expressed grave concerns over the delayed delivery of crucial weaponry from western allies, attributing it to the loss of territory in Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia. Umerov revealed that approximately half of the promised weapons failed to reach Kyiv on time, leading to setbacks and casualties on the battlefield. Despite the efforts of Ukrainian troops in fortifying positions and building strongholds, the delayed supply of Western equipment poses significant challenges to their defense strategy.
Umerov emphasized the critical need for timely delivery of Western arms, stating that without it, Ukraine faces an uphill battle in confronting Russian aggression. He highlighted the immense financial resources Russia has poured into its assault on Ukraine, amounting to a staggering $150 billion, equivalent to 15% of its GDP. However, with House Republicans in Washington obstructing a US military aid package, Ukraine’s armed forces are facing shortages of air defense missiles and artillery shells.
Promised F-16 jets from an international coalition, including the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, have yet to arrive, further exacerbating Ukraine’s struggle for air superiority. Despite these challenges, Umerov noted some successes, such as reclaiming territory in the Black Sea region and parts of northeastern and southern Ukraine, including the liberation of Kharkiv oblast and the city of Kherson in 2022.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy is expected to outline Ukraine’s strategy for countering Russian aggression in an upcoming press conference. However, recent setbacks, including the loss of the eastern frontline city of Avdiivka to Russian forces, underscore the urgency of the situation.
Umerov, a Muslim and Crimean Tatar who assumed office in September, emphasized the need to combat corruption within the Ukrainian military. He condemned corruption during wartime as more detrimental than terrorism and pledged to root out any instances of malpractice within his ministry.
Efforts to address corruption include measures to eliminate corrupt practices and prevent inflated contracts for food supplies to troops. Additionally, Ukraine has ramped up drone production, developing its version of Russia’s Lancet drone capable of targeting strategic locations deep within Russian territory. These drones, along with over a million first-person view models, are expected to bolster Ukraine’s defenses amid shortages of artillery.
Officials highlighted the significance of drones as a primary defense mechanism, particularly in the face of advancing Russian forces equipped with armored vehicles and infantry. The conflict marks a new era in warfare, characterized by extensive missile strikes and unprecedented drone warfare, with over 8,000 missiles launched against Ukraine thus far.
