On February 14, 2019, Bharat was struck by tragedy as 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives in a devastating suicide bombing attack in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. This horrific incident ignited a fervent desire for justice and retaliation against the perpetrators responsible for such heinous acts of terror.
Operation Bandar: In response to the Pulwama attack, Bharat’s armed forces swiftly executed “Operation Bandar.” In the early hours of the morning on February 26, 2019, the Indian Air Force launched a daring airstrike on the biggest terror training camp of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) in Balakot, Pakistan. Utilizing Mirage 2000 fighter jets, the Indian Air Force deployed five Israeli SPICE bombs with penetrator warheads, precisely targeting the terrorist base camps. The operation was meticulously planned and executed with precision at 3:30 am, delivering a decisive blow to the perpetrators of terror.
In response to Bharat’s airstrike, Pakistan Air Force retaliated by attacking the Rajouri sector. Amidst the intense aerial engagement, the Indian Air Force successfully shot down a Pakistani F-16 fighter jet. However, during the skirmish, one Indian MIG-21 Bison strayed into Pakistani territory, leading to the capture of Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman. Despite being outnumbered, Wing Commander Varthaman displayed exemplary courage and skill by downing the enemy aircraft before being taken into captivity.
Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman’s capture sparked international concern, yet his dignified conduct under captivity earned him widespread admiration and respect. Following diplomatic efforts and mounting pressure, Pakistan released Wing Commander Varthaman on March 1, 2019. His valiant actions during the aerial engagement earned him the prestigious wartime gallantry award, the Vir Chakra, recognizing his unwavering bravery and commitment to duty.
The Balakot airstrike of 2019 marked a significant turning point in Bharat’s approach towards tackling cross-border terrorism. By targeting the terrorist infrastructure deep inside Pakistani territory, Bharat sent a clear message that it would not hesitate to take decisive action against those who threaten its security and sovereignty. The destruction of the terror training camp disrupted the nefarious activities of JeM and subsequently led to a significant decrease in terrorist attacks in the Kashmir valley. Furthermore, Bharat’s firm resolve in the face of adversity demonstrated its unwavering commitment to combatting terrorism and safeguarding its citizens.
The events surrounding Operation Bandar and its aftermath underscore the importance of decisive action in confronting terrorism. Through strategic planning and steadfast determination, Bharat delivered a resounding message that it would not tolerate acts of terror on its soil. The bravery and sacrifice of individuals like Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman serve as a testament to the indomitable spirit of India’s armed forces in safeguarding the nation’s security and integrity.
