Farmers from various unions joined forces under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) to stage a tractor march on the Ludhiana-Delhi national highway. The march was organized as a peaceful protest against the ongoing meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in Abu Dhabi. Demonstrators remained united and determined to voice their concerns.
The tractor rally proceeded silently, with farmers positioning their tractors facing towards Delhi at multiple locations across the district, including Kohara, Samrala, Khamano, Sidhwan Bet, Jagraon, and Mullanpur. Despite the silent nature of the protest, the message was clear: the farmers were resolute in their commitment to address grievances through non-violent means.
Representatives from various farmer unions used the rally as a platform to reiterate their demands and express unwavering determination to continue the struggle until their issues are resolved. Key concerns included the implementation of agricultural policies, the repeal of the three contentious farm laws, and safeguarding farmers’ interests against adverse effects of international trade agreements.
Volunteers from Beeja village stepped up to organize a langar (community kitchen) to support the farmers’ cause.
Harinder Singh, representing BKU Lakhowal, highlighted the rationale behind the silent protest, stating, “We conducted the protest in a silent manner to express our dissent against the three-day WTO meeting and the ongoing strike at the borders. Moreover, we demand to keep agricultural plans away from WTO as they usually stop the subsidies on crops and stop giving the MSP.”
The tractor march served as a visible manifestation of farmers’ unity and determination to address their concerns. As the protest continues, the farmers remain steadfast in their resolve, calling for meaningful dialogue and concrete action to address the challenges facing agricultural communities.
