In a heartbreaking incident in the Dhobi Ghat area of Tughlak Lane, a two-year-old girl fell victim to a fatal attack by a pack of stray dogs. The incident, which occurred around 6 pm on Saturday, left the child with severe injuries leading to her untimely demise. According to reports, the girl was playing outside her home when she was viciously attacked by a group of four to five dogs.
Locals in the area recounted that the loud music from nearby DJ sessions drowned out the girl’s screams during the harrowing attack. It wasn’t until some bystanders intervened that she was freed from the dogs’ grasp, but by then, the damage had been done, and she had sustained grievous injuries.
The victim’s family, devastated by the tragedy, described the horrific scene they encountered upon rushing to the spot. Rahul, the girl’s father who works as a laundry man, along with other family members, found her in a dreadful state, surrounded by blood, with her right ear mauled by the dogs. Despite efforts to rush her to the hospital, she tragically succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
This isn’t the first instance of a dog attack in the area, as per the victim’s uncle, Ravi Kumar, who highlighted a similar incident involving another child in the family a few months prior. Despite attempts to address the issue by approaching individuals known to feed the stray dogs, they were allegedly met with threats instead of cooperation.
The lack of action from authorities despite repeated complaints from locals about stray dogs attacking children, cats, and chickens has raised concerns. In response, senior officials from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) stated that their team found the dogs in question had been operated and vaccinated. However, they acknowledged the need for further measures to address the issue effectively.
Mayor Shelly Oberoi visited the grieving family to offer condolences and assured them of all possible assistance. She emphasized the need for collaboration between municipal authorities and animal welfare organizations to find a solution to the problem of stray animals in Delhi. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also issued orders to ensure such tragic incidents do not recur, instructing concerned departments to prepare a comprehensive report on areas most prone to such attacks.
