The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced that two of its prominent union ministers, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar, will be contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sitharaman, currently serving as the finance minister, and Jaishankar, who holds the external affairs portfolio, are known for their eloquence and extensive experience in their respective fields. Despite being long-time members of the Upper House of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, they have not previously participated in popular elections.
Union minister Pralhad Joshi, who oversees the Coal and Mines portfolio, revealed the BJP’s plan for Sitharaman and Jaishankar’s electoral debut. While their candidacy has been confirmed, the specific constituencies from which they will contest have not yet been disclosed by the party. There’s speculation about whether they will run from Karnataka, but Joshi emphasized that no final decision has been made.
Sitharaman, a BJP member since 2008, has held various roles within the party, including national spokesperson. She entered the Rajya Sabha from Andhra Pradesh in 2014 and subsequently served as the defence minister from 2017 to 2019. On the other hand, Jaishankar, a career diplomat, rose to prominence as India’s foreign secretary in 2015. He was later appointed to Modi’s cabinet in 2019 and nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
While Sitharaman currently represents Karnataka in the Rajya Sabha, Jaishankar holds a seat from Gujarat. Both ministers have garnered attention for their contributions to national and international affairs, with Jaishankar particularly noted for his vigorous defense of Indian foreign policy on global platforms. Their decision to transition from the Rajya Sabha to the Lok Sabha reflects the BJP’s strategy for the upcoming elections and underscores their commitment to engaging directly with voters at the grassroots level.
As preparations for the Lok Sabha elections intensify, the BJP’s nomination of Sitharaman and Jaishankar signals a strategic move to leverage their expertise and popularity in key constituencies. The anticipation now lies in the announcement of their respective constituencies, which will likely have significant implications for the electoral landscape in those regions. With their formidable track record and the backing of the BJP, Sitharaman and Jaishankar’s entry into Lok Sabha politics is poised to make waves in the upcoming elections.
