Thailand’s Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sihasak Phuangketkeow, has expressed optimism about the growing strength of bilateral relations between Thailand and Bharat. He emphasized the potential for these ties to evolve into a strategic partnership, which would significantly enhance cooperation between the two nations on regional and global platforms.
Speaking at a lecture organized by the Indian Council of World Affairs, Phuangketkeow highlighted the historical context of the relationship, noting a past distance exacerbated by the Cold War era. However, he underscored the significant shifts in foreign policy dynamics since then, particularly with the end of the Cold War and subsequent realignments in regional and global relations.
The Vice Minister emphasized the need to accelerate efforts towards establishing a strategic partnership between Thailand and Bharat, tracing back to discussions initiated in 1991 with Bharat’s Look East Policy announcement. He recalled key milestones, including Bharat’s elevation to a full dialogue partner in 1995 and the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between Bharat and ASEAN in 2002.
Phuangketkeow highlighted the significance of the year 2012 in Bharat-Thailand relations, marking Bharat’s designation as a strategic partner. He also noted Prime Minister Modi’s announcement in 2014, transitioning from the Look East Policy to the Act East Policy, further solidifying the partnership’s trajectory.
Discussing contemporary geopolitical dynamics, Phuangketkeow pointed to the emergence of the Indo-Pacific region, emphasizing its transformative impact on international relations. He praised Bharat’s foreign policy under External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, highlighting its independent yet constructive approach amidst evolving geopolitical competition.
The Vice Minister elaborated on the Indo-Pacific concept, stressing its economic and strategic importance, particularly regarding maritime security and freedom of navigation. He also underscored the role of ASEAN in shaping regional dynamics, noting its substantial economic footprint and aspirations for future growth.
In conclusion, Phuangketkeow expressed confidence in the continued growth of the partnership between Thailand and Bharat, envisioning it as not merely bilateral but also regional and potentially global in scope. He emphasized the need for sustained collaboration to address emerging challenges and capitalize on opportunities in the evolving geopolitical landscape.
