Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a series of infrastructure projects on Wednesday in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, totaling an investment of ₹17,300 crore. These projects, including the Outer Harbor Container Terminal at VO Chidambaranar Port and lighthouses, mark a significant step towards enhancing the region’s connectivity and economic growth.
Addressing the public gathering, PM Modi emphasized the importance of these developments in fostering national unity and progress under the motto of ‘Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat’. He commended Tamil Nadu for its role in advancing the country’s development agenda.
The Prime Minister highlighted the remarkable progress Bharat has made in maritime infrastructure, with significant improvements in port capacity, waterway transportation, and cruise tourism over the past decade. He emphasized the potential for further growth in the maritime sector, promising increased employment opportunities for the youth, particularly in coastal states like Tamil Nadu.
PM Modi also took a swipe at the previous UPA government, stating that many of the projects inaugurated had been long-standing demands of the local populace, implying delayed implementation under previous administrations.
The cornerstone of the inauguration was the Outer Harbor Container Terminal at VO Chidambaranar Port, designed to enhance Bharat’s competitiveness in global trade by leveraging its extensive coastline and strategic geographical location.
Additionally, PM Modi unveiled initiatives aimed at establishing the VO Chidambaranar Port as Bharat’s first Green Hydrogen Hub Port. These initiatives include a desalination plant, hydrogen production facilities, and bunkering infrastructure, aligning with the nation’s commitment to clean energy and sustainability.
Prior to the inauguration, PM Modi visited an exhibition showcasing the country’s first Green Hydrogen Hub in Thoothukudi. He also flagged off Bharat’s maiden indigenous green hydrogen fuel cell inland waterway vessel, a significant stride towards embracing clean energy solutions and achieving net-zero emissions goals.
In furtherance of enhancing coastal infrastructure and tourism, PM Modi inaugurated tourist facilities in 75 lighthouses across ten States/UTs. Additionally, national rail projects aimed at doubling the Vanchi Maniyachchi – Nagercoil rail line, including the Vanchi Maniyachchi – Tirunelveli section and Melappalayam – Aralvaymoli section, were dedicated to the nation.
The inauguration of these projects not only signifies a substantial investment in Tamil Nadu’s development but also underscores Bharat’s commitment to bolstering its infrastructure and embracing sustainable growth strategies. PM Modi’s visit heralds a new chapter of progress and prosperity for the region, promising socio-economic transformation and inclusive development.
