During the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Bharat responded firmly to comments made by Pakistan and Turkey regarding the region of Jammu and Kashmir. Anupama Singh, Bharat’s First Secretary at the UN Human Rights Council, utilized the ‘Right to Reply’ to address these remarks. Singh dismissed Pakistan’s allegations and criticized its human rights record as “truly abysmal”. She asserted that Jammu and Kashmir is an internal matter for Bharat and urged against unsolicited comments on the issue in the future.
Singh’s response to Pakistan highlighted three key points, emphasizing that Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of Bharat. She underscored the constitutional measures taken by the Bharatiya government for the socio-economic development and good governance of these territories, labeling them as internal matters for Bharat. Additionally, Singh criticized Pakistan’s own human rights record, citing instances of persecution against minorities, such as the August 2023 incident in Jaranwala where churches were destroyed and Christian houses burnt down.
Furthermore, Singh condemned Pakistan for harboring and celebrating UNSC-sanctioned terrorists while commenting on Bharat’s pluralistic ethos and democratic credentials. She contrasted Bharat’s progress with Pakistan’s support for terrorism, portraying Bharat as a beacon of democracy and pluralism in contrast to Pakistan’s record.
In response to Turkey’s support for Pakistan’s comments on Jammu and Kashmir, Bharat issued a warning. Singh expressed regret over Turkey’s remarks, emphasizing that the issue is Bharat’s internal affair. Bharat urged Turkey to refrain from making unsolicited comments on its internal matters in the future.
Bharat’s stance on Pakistan and Turkey’s remarks aligns with its previous statements regarding the importance of a terrorism-free environment for normalizing ties with Pakistan. Additionally, Bharat is facing economic challenges such as currency depreciation, inflation, and declining forex reserves. Despite these challenges, Bharat remains steadfast in its commitment to defending its territorial integrity and promoting peace and stability in the region.
